Step Up Youth Program Volunteer Cycle
- Step 1 – Application
-
Applications for the Step Up Youth Program (SUYP) open each year in early spring. Check the website and sign up to receive an email when applications open.
- Step 2 – Interview
-
If selected, complete an interview with Volunteer Resources staff. This is an opportunity to learn about the program and for us to determine your suitability.
- Step 3 – Onboarding
-
After a successful interview, you will be invited to complete onboarding. To ensure you're ready to volunteer when the program starts in the fall, complete all tasks before the deadline.
Onboarding includes:
- criminal reference check
- online training
- photo identification
- Step 4 – Orientation
-
Complete program orientations online and site-specific orientation in-person. Orientations are lead by Volunteer Resources staff or Volunteer Team Leaders who have experience in the program.
- Step 5 – Placement
-
Participate in weekly volunteer shifts after school at your local Island Health site, the monthly SUYP Guest Speaker series, and educational events throughout the program. The SUYP runs from fall to spring each school year.
- Step 6 – Wrap Up
-
You are welcome to continue volunteering in the SUYP during high school and you may be invited to move into a leadership role to support volunteers after your first year. Apply for program scholarship in Grade 12.
